One of the most common reasons coatings fail to perform as expected isn’t the product — it’s the preparation. No matter how advanced or durable a coating may be, applying it to a dirty, oily, or uneven surface can compromise adhesion and shorten its lifespan. Proper cleaning before application is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to ensure long-term success, and at INSECO, we emphasize this step as a cornerstone of every project.
The cleaning process begins with identifying the type of surface and the contaminants present. For example, wood surfaces may have mildew, oils, or old finishes that need to be removed, while concrete or brick pavers might be covered in dust, efflorescence, or tire marks. Start by sweeping or blowing off loose debris, then wash with an appropriate cleaner. For most projects, a biodegradable detergent or mild acid cleaner will suffice, but more stubborn residues may require specialty cleaners designed for deep penetration. Always rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any chemical residues that could interfere with the coating’s ability to bond.
Timing is also critical. Surfaces must be completely dry before applying any INSECO specialty coating. Moisture trapped beneath the coating can lead to cloudiness, peeling, or uneven curing. On porous materials like wood and concrete, give the surface at least 24 to 48 hours of drying time, depending on humidity and temperature conditions. When in doubt, perform a simple moisture test — lightly tape a piece of plastic to the surface for a few hours. If condensation appears underneath, allow more drying time.
By investing a little extra care in the cleaning and preparation stage, you’ll dramatically improve the adhesion, appearance, and performance of your coating project. INSECO’s commitment to excellence starts long before the first coat is applied — and it’s this attention to detail that helps our customers achieve consistent, professional-grade results every time.
